How to judge the quality of furniture wood?

1. The color is positive. All kinds of wood have their original color, such as red pine, sapwood light yellow, heartwood yellow through reddish; The color difference between the white pine sapwood and the heartwood is not large, and they are both white or light yellow; The heartwood of the goldenrod pine is yellow-brown, and the sapwood is light yellow; The sapwood is light yellow-brown, and the heartwood is dark gray; The sapwood of locust wood is yellow-white, and the heartwood is dark gray; willow heartwood brown, sapwood grayish-white; Ash heartwood light brown, sapwood shallower; The sapwood of oak wood is pale yellow, white with peeling, and the heartwood is dark brown; The walnut sapwood is grayish-white with brownish, and the heartwood is pale grayish-brown.

Green, pink, or blue streaks and spots on the wood indicate that the wood has mold multiply or has begun to decay.

2. The texture is smooth. The knots of the wood itself often destroy the smoothness of the grain. Dead joints are formed when the branches die during the growth process, the trunk no longer supplies nutrients to the branches, and the fibrous connections are broken.

This dead knot greatly reduces the strength of the wood, and special care should be taken when selecting and using it. The soft knot refers to the sparse part of the knot than the surrounding wood, which also reduces the strength of the wood. Some wood fibers are not arranged normally, showing tilting, twisting and other phenomena.

Such wood is prone to warping, cracking, and low strength along the direction of the wood grain.

3. No decay. Wood decays easily, and once it decays, it changes color, has a rotten smell, and the structure is brittle. However, the shallow decay is treated by dry manipulation and can still be used after brushing bitumen.

4. Less insect eyes. If the diameter of the insect suit is greater than 3 mm, the use grade should be reduced; Insect eyes with a diameter of less than 3 mm shall not exceed 5 pieces per meter for wood produced in the south, and no more than 15 pieces per meter for wood produced in the north (epidermal worm grooves can be omitted). Only such materials can be used as raw materials.

5. Dry operation. The moisture content of the wood used for building the house should be less than 18%. If timber is used, the volume becomes smaller after water loss, which can damage the structure of the house.

In general, the length of the wood is about 1/1000 (negligible), but the thickness varies greatly, up to 6%-12%.

When the wood is naturally dried, it should be stacked under a ventilated layer to avoid direct sun and rain.
