Baking soda can be used to clean a range hood.

The grease on the hood is generally difficult to clean because its main component is a complex mixture of fatty acids and other substances formed after the oxidation of fats.

After dissolving baking soda in water and heating it, it can be easily removed by soaking and scrubbing it with a rag (remember to wear gloves to prevent scalding).

The principle is that fatty acids are susceptible to saponification of sodium salts.
