Once upon a time, there was a Zen master who took in two disciples, and both of them studied at the same time, and went out together to participate in Zen.

Two disciples saw the footprints of a cow on the road. One of the disciples said, "This is a cow that is pregnant with a calf, and the cow is blind in her right eye; On the back of the ox was a woman who was also pregnant with a baby.

Another disciple was very surprised when he heard this, and asked, "How do you know?"

The man said, "I know by observing and thinking with my head." If you don't believe me, let's go ahead and see it together.

The two found the cow, and it was exactly as the man had said. Seeing this, the disciple thought, "I am studying with the same master as him, so why can't I see it?"

He went back and asked the Zen master, "We are walking together, and he can see many problems by the footprints of the ox, but I can't discern them at all." I hope Master will give me another lecture and let me be like him.

The Zen master asked another disciple, "How do you discern it?"

Disciple: I'm just applying the methods taught to us by Master in practice. When I saw the cow urinating, I knew it must be a cow; When you see the cow's right foot deeper, you know that it is carrying a calf; When he saw that the grass on the left side of the road did not fall down, but on the right side he was on the contrary, he knew that the ox must be blind in his right eye. And when he saw the urine of the oxen in the resting place, they knew that the ox was carrying a woman on its back. When you see the deep mark in the woman's right leg, you know that she must be pregnant with a baby.

The Zen master then said to another disciple: To learn is to be good at observation and to think with the mind. It's not enough to simply look at the surface of what to do. You can't make out anything from the cow tracks, it's not my responsibility.

As the saying goes: The master leads the door to practice by the individual. If you don't observe and think with your heart, it's just a superficial study, so how can you learn well? Not to mention cultivation, if you don't have to worry about it, no matter how much the master teaches, you won't be able to achieve positive results.
